Windchill Factor
We here in Erie are a hardy bunch who know how to persevere in a Snow-pocalypse! I would submit that issues of faith verses fear are at the core of Erie. We can be bold, over-comers when the need arises.
As a matter of fact, it was a tenacious 1926, Central High School, (now Erie High), graduate who coined the term and developed the initial formula for calculating the Windchill Factor. Paul Siple was the first Eagle Scout to sail with Admiral Byrd on the Antarctic expedition of 1928. Over the years, Siple and a colleague developed a scientific experiment to show how wind speed affects the rate of heat loss, thus making us feel colder when the wind is blowing.
We Erie-ites also love the pursuit of discovery even in the face of uncertainty, and sub-zero temperatures. Whether in science, exploration, or personal growth, discovery requires perseverance and adaptability as breakthroughs often come from revelation during the trial and error of life. Unwavering determination not only advances progress but also inspires a sense of wonder and possibility, reminding us that the journey of discovery is as valuable as the knowledge it yields.
The bible encourages that sense of wonder and the pursuit of discovery as a way to knowing God. It’s part of the purpose He has given humanity. Proverbs 25:2, states, “It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out,” suggesting that uncovering truths and exploring mysteries is a noble endeavor. The Bible also compels us to call to God, believing he will answer and tell us great and unsearchable things we did not know. For the works of God themselves, even cold and wind, invite discovery and reflection on His greatness.
The pursuit of discovery as a meaningful journey is often commended in Scripture. However, the Bible also warns against pride or the misuse of discovery, reminding believers to remain humble and acknowledge God as the ultimate source of truth! Self-reliance pushes one away from God and closer to the devil, who only wants to steal, kill, and destroy humanity and truth. What are you curious about? Would you take a risk and pursue that curiosity?
An article in Popular Mechanics (12/2016) says to remember this; no matter how cold it feels, one thing is objectively true. If the actual temperature is above freezing, even if the wind chill is below freezing, water won’t freeze, nor will your face!
